Pathway to being a GP (Family Physician) in Canada

As an International Medical Graduate (IMG) there are several steps and pathways to working as a GP in Canada.

• This begins with confirming your qualifications meet Canadian standards. UK GPs with CCT and MRCGP are recognised and eligible to practice in Canada.

• Gain registration with the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) and the provincial medical regulator where you plan to work (e.g. Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia etc).

• Apply for a Work Visa. Most GPs move forward with an employer-sponsored visa to begin practicing in Canada.

Medicare

Canada’s healthcare system, Medicare, is a publicly funded system that provides universal healthcare to all residents. Each province and territory oversees its own services, ensuring patients have access to essential medical care.

- Medicare System: Medicare covers medically necessary doctor visits, procedures, and tests, ensuring residents can access care without direct charges at the point of service.
- Provincial Role: Each province manages its own healthcare delivery, including licensing and billing, which means requirements can vary depending on where you choose to work.
- Billing & Payments: GPs bill services through the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) or its provincial equivalent, which standardises fees and supports fair remuneration for consultations and patient care.

Visa Options:

As an IMG you will require a Visa to work in Canada. This is sponsored through your employer.

The Express Entry programme such as the Federal Skilled Worker Program Visa is the recommended temporary visa for doctors. This also has the fastest application process.
