    1. Am I eligible to work as a GP in Australia if I trained in the UK?

    Yes – UK-trained GPs with MRCGP and CCT are recognised as comparable by the RACGP (Royal Australian College of General Practitioners) and AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency), making the registration process straightforward compared to many other countries.

    You’ll need to apply through the RACGP comparability pathway or the AHPRA expedited pathway, and a work visa. We have built a step-by-step guide for you, and will work with you through each stage.

    On average, 9–12 months from start to finish, though timelines vary depending on paperwork, visa approvals, and practice preferences.

    4. Do I need to sit any exams to work in Australia?

    UK GPs with CCT and MRCGP in the UK are not required to sit any additional exams to work in Australia.

    5. What locations are available for UK GPs in Australia?

    You will be able to work at practices within the DPA (Distribution Priority Areas). DPA practices are just outside major central business districts (city centres), but within an easy drive. You’d be eligible to work roughly 45 minutes from the major cities of Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney, including some superb coastal beach cities, the capital city of Canberra, and more rural areas if you prefer.

    6. What are the typical earnings for a UK GP in Australia?

    In your first year, earnings are typically AUD $250,000–$400,000, which is the equivalent of around £120,000-£200,000.

    Beyond your first year, most UK GPs tend to earn AUD $350,000-$500,00 (£170,000-£245,000), depending on billing percentage, hours and patient demand.

    7. Will I need supervision when I arrive?

    Yes - most UK GPs begin with a Level 3 Supervision period (usually around 6 months).

    8. Can my family move with me?

    Yes - your visa can include dependents. Many GPs move with their partners and children.

    9. What lifestyle changes can I expect?

    GPs in Australia often highlight better work-life balance, more sunshine, more outdoor activities and reduced admin pressures compared to the NHS.

    10. When should I start the process if I want to move?

    It’s best to begin at least 12 months before your planned move to ensure registration, visas and relocation are all completed in time.

    11. Where are UK GPs most needed in Australia?

    High-demand areas include regional and outer metro locations such as Western Australia, Queensland, South Australia and Victoria.
