    Eligibility, Registration and Exams

Am I eligible to work as a GP in Australia if I trained in the UK?

Yes. UK-trained GPs holding MRCGP and CCT are recognised by the RACGP as “substantially comparable,” which is the fastest of the three comparability tiers and means a more straightforward pathway than doctors from most other countries face.

This recognition comes via a comparability assessment against your MRCGP and CCT, run jointly by AHPRA and the RACGP. It isn’t automatic (see below), but for most CCT holders it’s a formality rather than a hurdle.

Do UK GP qualifications transfer automatically to Australia?

No, not automatically, though the process is close to it for most UK GPs. Your MRCGP and CCT still need to go through a formal comparability assessment with the RACGP before AHPRA will register you.

For UK GPs with CCT and MRCGP, this assessment nearly always results in a “substantially comparable” outcome, which is the quickest route through and typically means no additional exams. If your qualification sits outside this (for example, MRCGP International without UK-based clinical training), you’d usually be assessed as “partially comparable,” which does involve further exams and a longer timeline. We’ll confirm which category applies to you before you commit to anything.

Do I need to sit exams to work as a GP in Australia if I’m already GMC-registered?

In most cases, no. If you hold MRCGP and CCT and are assessed as “substantially comparable,” you won’t need to sit RACGP exams.

If you’re assessed as “partially comparable” instead, you would typically need to complete FRACGP exams (the AKT, KFP and CCE) as part of a longer pathway. There’s also a newer route worth knowing about: from 1 July 2026, the Medical Board of Australia has been expanding its Expedited Specialist Pathway, which in some cases allows eligible UK GP specialists to apply directly to AHPRA for specialist registration without going through the RACGP’s Fellowship Support Program first. This is a genuinely useful development but the eligibility criteria are specific and still evolving, so we’d recommend checking your individual position with us or directly with AHPRA rather than assuming it applies. We’ll always tell you plainly if we’re not certain which pathway you’ll be assessed under.

What’s the registration process like for Australia?

You’ll go through an RACGP comparability assessment, then apply to AHPRA for registration, alongside a work visa application. We build a step-by-step plan for each stage and work through it with you.

The exact route depends on your comparability outcome (see above), but broadly it involves the comparability assessment, AHPRA registration, English language and criminal history checks if required, securing an approved position (usually in a Distribution Priority Area), and your visa. We manage the sequencing of this so nothing stalls waiting on something else.

How long does GP registration take in Australia compared with other countries?

Australia’s registration route for UK-trained GPs is generally one of the faster international pathways, largely because of the mutual recognition between the GMC-based CCT and RACGP’s comparability framework. We can’t give you a precise like-for-like timeline against Canada or New Zealand here, since it varies by province in Canada and by individual circumstances in both countries, but as a general pattern, Australia tends to be quicker than most Canadian provincial routes and broadly comparable to New Zealand’s. If you want a direct comparison for your own situation, we’d rather talk it through properly than give you a generic number. See our Canada and New Zealand FAQ pages for those pathways specifically.

How long does the whole process take, start to finish?

On average, 9 to 12 months from starting the process to arriving in Australia, though this varies with your comparability outcome, visa processing times and how quickly you secure a placement.

When should I start the process if I want to move?

Ideally at least 12 months before your planned move, so registration, visa approval and relocation logistics all have room to complete without rushing.

    Visas and Family

What visas are available for GPs?

Most UK GPs move to Australia on a subclass 482 Skills in Demand visa (formerly the Temporary Skill Shortage visa). We'll confirm the current visa route and requirements for your specific situation, since visa categories and criteria are reviewed periodically by the Australian government.

Can my family move with me?

Yes. Your visa can include dependents, and many GPs relocate with partners and children. We can talk you through what that means practically, from schooling to your partner's own work rights.

Where are UK GPs most needed in Australia?

Demand is strongest in regional and outer metro areas, particularly in Western Australia, Queensland, South Australia and Victoria. We can talk you through city, suburban, rural, coastal or inland options depending on what you and your family want from the move.

Will I be able to build a patient base overseas?

Yes, generally more quickly than you might expect. Most UK GPs are placed in DPAs precisely because those areas are under-supplied, so demand for appointments is high and patient lists tend to build faster than in an already saturated UK area. That said, how quickly this happens depends on the specific practice, location and your own working pattern, so it's not something we'd put a fixed number on without knowing your placement.

    Money and Lifestyle

What are the typical earnings for a UK GP in Australia?

In your first year, earnings are typically AUD $250,000 to $400,000 (roughly £120,000 to £200,000 at recent exchange rates). Beyond the first year, most UK GPs move into the AUD $350,000 to $500,000 range (roughly £170,000 to £245,000), depending on billing percentage, hours worked and patient demand.

These figures are indicative ranges based on the roles we place, not a guarantee, and actual earnings depend heavily on your billing arrangement and location.

Is it worth moving from the UK to Australia as a GP financially?

For most GPs, yes, though the honest answer is “it depends on your circumstances” rather than a flat yes. Gross earnings are meaningfully higher in Australia, and several published comparisons put Australian GP incomes well above UK equivalents even after accounting for cost of living. But the full picture includes Australian income tax, medical indemnity costs, exchange rate movements, and your personal cost of living in your chosen location, all of which vary enough that we’d rather run the actual numbers for your situation than give you a generic “yes.”

What we can say with confidence: none of the UK GPs we’ve placed in Australia have come to us wanting to move back for financial reasons. But we’d encourage you to treat any headline salary comparison, including the ones on this page, as a starting point for a proper conversation rather than a guarantee.

Do GPs get better work-life balance in Australia than the UK?

Most UK GPs who make the move report a better work-life balance, though this is based on what we consistently hear from candidates rather than a single definitive study. Industry salary surveys have reported UK GPs seeing meaningfully more patients per week on average than their Australian counterparts, alongside longer working weeks, though exact figures vary by survey and by individual practice.

The practical drivers we see most often are lower patient volumes per session, less bureaucratic and admin pressure than the NHS, and more flexibility over working patterns. We’d rather you hear this from GPs who’ve made the move than take our word for it. We can put you in touch with candidates we’ve placed if that would help.

Will I need supervision when I arrive?

Yes, most UK GPs begin with a Level 3 Supervision period, usually around six months, even where no additional exams are required.

What lifestyle changes can I expect?

Most GPs who move highlight more sunshine, more outdoor activity, and reduced day-to-day admin pressure compared with the NHS. Beyond that, the specific changes depend heavily on where in Australia you settle, city, coastal or rural, so this is worth talking through properly rather than treating as one-size-fits-all.

    Working With a Relocation Agency

What does a GP relocation agency actually help with beyond finding a job?

A good agency manages the parts of the move that have nothing to do with the job itself: your comparability assessment and AHPRA registration paperwork, visa application and timing, matching you to a practice and location that actually suits your circumstances, and ongoing support once you've arrived, not just up to your start date.

At Menlo Park, this is what we mean by "wrap-around care." You get a dedicated consultant who stays with you through registration, visa, relocation logistics and settling in, rather than being handed off once a contract's signed. That includes practical things like helping your family understand schooling and visa dependent rights, and being a point of contact if something goes wrong with your placement after you've started.

How do GP relocation recruitment agencies get paid? Does it cost the GP anything?

No, it doesn't cost you anything. Recruitment agencies, including us, are paid by the receiving practice once a placement is successfully made, not by the candidate. This is standard across UK and international healthcare recruitment.

There's no fee at any stage for you as a GP, whether that's registration support, visa guidance, or ongoing help once you've relocated. If any agency asks you to pay for these services directly, that's worth questioning
