Relocating Advice for Veterinary Surgeons

Why Relocating for the Right Role Can Be a Game-Changer for Veterinary Surgeons

By Lucy Emberton-Leveson

As a veterinary recruiter, I’ve worked with hundreds of veterinary surgeons at all stages of their careers, from newly qualified grads to seasoned specialists. One of the most common concerns I hear is: “I love what I do, but something’s not quite right.” Often, what’s missing isn’t passion or skill it’s the right environment.

In many cases, the solution isn’t just a new role, it’s a new location.

Why Relocation Shouldn’t Be Feared… But Embraced

Veterinary medicine is a deeply rewarding profession, but it also comes with high demands. Long hours, emotional strain, and burnout are real issues in the industry. What I’ve seen time and again is that the right job in the wrong place can leave even the most dedicated vet feeling disillusioned. Conversely, the right role in the right location can completely transform a career, and a life.

Here’s why I often encourage veterinary surgeons to keep an open mind about relocating:

1. Opportunities Vary Widely by Region

Some areas are saturated with applicants. Others are crying out for qualified vets. Practices in rural or underserved areas often offer:

  • Higher salaries or signing bonuses
  • More autonomy
  • A wider and more interesting caseload
  • Faster progression into leadership or specialist positions

It’s not uncommon for vets to relocate and find themselves doing more of the work they love, with better support and less red tape.

2. Better Work-Life Balance Is Within Reach

I’ve placed vets in coastal towns, countryside clinics, and even remote island practices all places where they’ve found a renewed sense of balance. Reduced commute times, quieter environments, or simply a team that respects your off-hours can make a massive difference.

One vet told me after relocating: “I didn’t realise how stressed I was until I wasn’t anymore.”

3. Specialism and Development Opportunities

If you’re looking to specialise, whether in surgery, imaging, behaviour, or exotics—sometimes you need to go where the right facilities and mentors are. I’ve helped candidates move across the country to join referral hospitals or teaching clinics that accelerated their development in ways local options simply couldn’t.

Many of these roles also offer structured CPD packages and training support that can set you up for long-term success.

4. Improved Culture and Job Satisfaction

No two practices are the same. Culture matters. Some teams are collaborative, forward-thinking, and genuinely supportive. Others may be stuck in outdated systems or struggling with burnout.

I often remind candidates: relocating isn’t just about geography, it’s about finding a place where your values align with the clinic’s approach to care, communication, and team dynamics.

5. A Fresh Start Can Spark New Energy

Relocating can feel daunting, but it’s also exciting. New people, new scenery, new lifestyle. It’s a chance to reset routines and rediscover your enthusiasm for vet med. Many candidates tell me that relocating gave them a new lease on life, not just professionally, but personally.

What to Consider Before Making the Move

As a recruiter, my job isn’t just to “fill roles”it’s to help you find the right fit. If you’re considering relocation, here are a few things to weigh up:

  • Licensing/registration in the new location (especially internationally)
  • Cost of living vs. salary
  • Career progression opportunities
  • Support for your family or partner
  • Housing and community vibe

I always recommend having an honest conversation about your goals, your non-negotiables, and your vision for the future. That way, we can identify roles that truly suit you, not just on paper, but in practice.

Relocation isn’t for everyone, but for many veterinary surgeons, it’s the catalyst that takes a good career and makes it great. If you’ve been feeling stuck, undervalued, or simply ready for change, don’t rule out moving for the right role.
