Read our guide to what to look for in your first practice
If you’re a UK GP coming to the end of your qualification and you’re now starting to think about finding your first practice, there is a lot to consider!
Everyone has their own individual requirements, so it’s important to know where to start when looking for your first practice.
Let us take you through a few of the main points to consider:
Identify Your Priorities:
What aspects of your current role do you enjoy? Is it patient interaction, variety in cases, work-life balance, or career progression? Identifying your priorities can help you narrow down your search to roles that align with your personal and professional goals.
Skills & Interests:
Reflect on your strengths and areas where you’d like to grow. Do you have a particular interest in a specific medical field (e.g., paediatrics, geriatrics, mental health)? You might want to pursue opportunities in that direction.
Location:
Consider whether you want to work in an urban, suburban, or rural setting. Proximity to family, lifestyle preferences, and living costs can influence your decision.
Interview Questions:
Be prepared to discuss your clinical experience, communication skills, and how you handle various patient scenarios. Employers may also ask about how you handle challenges such as time management, patient workload, and teamwork.
There is a lot to consider when embarking on finding your first practice, so the more prepared you are, the easier it will be.
