Interview tips for newly qualified GPs
We all know that the job market for newly qualified GPs is difficult at the moment, with a perceived lack of jobs and opportunities in many local areas. How can you stand out from the crowd and increase your chances of success, other than applying via Menlo Park Recruitment? Here, our consultant Lee Hutchinson explains how!

Are you maximising your search area enough?
Be open-minded on your commute and try not to be too strict. 20 miles sounds like a lot, but depending on the transport route or types of road, this could only be 20 minutes.
Don’t set such a rigid boundary and see what other opportunities are out there, if you expand by a few miles or increase your commute by a few minutes.
Can you be more flexible with the sessions that you can offer?
Many GPs are looking to work 4-8 sessions per week – can you be flexible with what you can offer to ideally fit the practice/surgery requirements?
You could always look to evolve with the practice in future and look to work with them with future hires to better accommodate your personal requirements.
Be open-minded about the operating system:
Some GPs who have trained with EMIS or SystmOne can find it daunting to apply for a role with a different system than they have used previously. Whilst experience is ideal, full training and support is always given.
Offer to meet the team:
This is most likely the most important advice we could give. Offer to meet the practice manager or the team informally, before interview.
This shows your enthusiasm for the role and will mean any more formal interview in the future feels much more relaxed for you and the clinical team as you will hopefully have built a rapport.
Speak to a professional:
Try to partner with a market-leading consultancy who have many roles not openly advertised who will be able to offer tailored advice, guidance, and preparation.
Candidates who apply through a reputable agency are much more likely to be successful – you get all the inside information before application so you are much more prepared than other applicants.
