There is a lot of stigma around this, there are different rules for different countries based on their level qualifications meeting the comparability eligibility. For UK-trained GPs holding CCT and MRCGP, you are classified as substantially comparable, allowing you to work in DPA locations and MMM1 or above areas. This results in you having the ability to work closer to major cities rather than remote regions.
These restrictions only apply to work, not residency. Due to GP oversupply in metro areas, DPA prioritizes placing overseas GPs in locations with greater need.
It’s important to note that these restrictions are only in place for where you work, not where you would live.
The closest DPA area to a city is only a short 15 minutes, whereas in some other major cities, you could be looking at 50 minutes out of the CBD (this is city dependent).
The 19AB exemption is crucial for UK GPs looking to work in Australia. It allows international medical graduates (IMGs) to bypass the 10-year moratorium restricting them to District Priority Areas (DPA). Key exemptions include:
– 6-Month Locum Exemption: Enables GPs to work across multiple non-DPA locations for 6 months at a time.
– DPA Replacement Exemption: Rare but allows GPs to replace a departing doctor in a non-DPA area.
– Spousal Exemption: Grants exemptions based on a spouse’s location or career requirements.
