A Day at Goodman’s Fields

The Future of General Practice, Goodman’s Fields

By Kirsty Morris

Yesterday, I had the privilege of visiting Goodman’s Fields, a bustling general practice in the heart of East Central London. With a patient base of 34,000 individuals from diverse backgrounds, this practice stands out for its exceptional approach to healthcare delivery. Here’s a glimpse into what makes Goodman’s Fields a beacon of innovation and care in the medical community.

Cutting-Edge Systems and Technology

From the moment a patient makes contact, Goodman’s Fields utilizes bespoke systems and the latest technology to ensure a seamless experience. The reception team, consisting of six dedicated receptionists, handles an impressive volume of calls—505 before midday alone. However, the majority of patients prefer using their custom app, DrIQ. This app significantly enhances convenience, allowing patients to manage appointments and access services effortlessly.

Agnieszka Jaruga, the Regional Business Manager, shared how they run educational sessions for patients unfamiliar with the app. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, leading to a substantial increase in app usage. This tech-forward approach not only streamlines operations but also empowers patients, making healthcare more accessible and efficient.

Multilingual Support and Community Trust

Understanding the diverse patient base, Goodman’s Fields employs a multilingual non-clinical team. This initiative helps bridge communication gaps, providing reassurance and building trust with patients who do not speak English. Such inclusive practices ensure that every patient feels understood and valued, fostering a community of trust and cooperation.

Empowering Patients Through Education

Dr Saffan Qureshi, the Regional Medical Director, highlighted their commitment to patient education. Goodman’s Fields offers various services and educational resources to encourage patients to take an active role in their health. For instance, they provide a blood pressure machine for patients to use without needing an appointment. This initiative empowers patients to monitor their health proactively, promoting a culture of accountability and well-being.

A Non-Hierarchical, Inclusive Culture

One of the standout features of Goodman’s Fields is its non-hierarchical, inclusive culture. Every team member, from receptionists to GPs, is valued and recognized as an integral part of the practice’s success. This inclusive environment is not only motivational but also fosters a sense of community and shared purpose.

GPs at Goodman’s Fields are highly valued and have the opportunity to focus on their areas of special interest, such as men’s health or joint injections, for a full day of appointments. This approach not only enhances job satisfaction but also ensures that patients receive expert care tailored to their specific needs.

Commitment to Continuous Learning and Development

The practice places a high emphasis on continuous learning and development. Each multidisciplinary clinician regularly undertakes training and exams to maintain and enhance their skills. This commitment to professional growth ensures that the team remains at the forefront of medical advancements.

Moreover, GPs at Goodman’s Fields have the opportunity to participate in research projects, further contributing to the medical field and enhancing their expertise. The environment is lively, forward-thinking, and deeply focused on the well-being of both patients and staff.

Conclusion

Goodman’s Fields is more than just a general practice; it is a model of what modern, patient-centred healthcare can achieve. Their innovative use of technology, commitment to education, inclusive culture, and dedication to continuous improvement set them apart as a leader in the medical community. Visiting this practice was a truly inspiring experience, showcasing the incredible potential of a forward-thinking, well-being-focused healthcare environment.

I extend my thanks once again to Agnieszka and Saffan for hosting me as a guest yesterday!
