    What is Medicare?

As a GP, your services are billed through the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS), which outlines the fees for consultations, procedures, and tests. Medicare is essential in enabling access to healthcare, promoting continuity of care, and supporting GPs with standardized payments for patient services.

    Australian billing system:

There three main types of billing for GPs: bulk billing, private billing, and mixed billing.

    • Bulk Billing: The GP bills Medicare directly for services, and patients are not charged out-of-pocket. The GP is reimbursed by Medicare with set rebates.

    • Private Billing: Patients are charged fees higher than the Medicare rebate, meaning they pay out-of-pocket, often for longer consultations or specialized care.

    • Mixed Billing: A combination of bulk billing for certain services and private billing for others, providing flexibility for both patients and GPs.

Each model offers a different approach, allowing GPs to tailor services. GPs can choose to bulk-bill (where patients pay nothing) or private bill (patients pay upfront and claim rebates later). GPs can also opt for mixed billing, which combines Medicare rebates with private fees, giving flexibility in how they charge for services.
