Increasing workload. How will GPs and practices cope?
Increased workload demand
Since the government advised people to stay at home on the 23rd March, there has been a steady backlog being created for GPs. GPs and Surgeries were offering telephone triage for patients, but it has been reported that appointment levels dropped significantly. Because of the pandemic people were feeling less inclined to contact their GP. Patients have been contacting surgeries less in the last 3 months. Because of this the workload has been building up.
As lockdown restriction gradually ease, this means more patients will continue to contact their surgery. This week there have be many articles to say GPs are concerned that they can’t meet the demand.
It’s reported 57% of GPs are either ‘not very’ or ‘not at all’ confident in their ability to cope with expected demand. And only 1 in 10 who feel ‘very confident’. In addition to this, GPs are concerned with additional mental health related issues that have been caused by the pandemic. As a result, further adding to their workload.
