Australia GP Registration: RACGP PEP Specialist Pathway vs AHPRA Fast Track

    By Thomas Tallis

RACGP PEP Specialist Pathway vs AHPRA Fast Track

If you’re a UK-trained GP considering a move to Australia, you’ve likely come across two popular registration routes: the RACGP PEP Specialist Pathway and the newer AHPRA Fast Track process. Both are viable options but choosing the right one can make all the difference in your journey down under.

The RACGP PEP Specialist Pathway is a well-established, trusted route that results in Fellowship—the gold standard in general practice across Australia. It’s a process recognised by employers, patients, and Medicare alike, often allowing you to command higher fees and enjoy broader career opportunities.

On the other hand, the AHPRA Fast Track process, introduced in late 2024, offers a quicker and more cost-effective option for gaining Vocational Registration (VR) status. However, this route does not provide Fellowship on completion—though GPs can apply for it separately after settling in Australia.

So, which option is right for you?

It depends on your priorities. If speed and affordability are crucial, the Fast Track route may appeal to you. But if long-term recognition, earning potential, and professional prestige are your focus, the RACGP pathway is the way to go.

What’s the difference between a VR GP and a Fellow GP?

    • A VR GP is recognised by Medicare for meeting primary care standards but may not have completed formal Fellowship training.
    • A Fellow GP, however, has completed additional assessments through the RACGP or ACRRM, indicating an elite level of expertise in general practice.

Both designations allow you to practise independently, but Fellowship often opens more doors and boosts your credibility.

We support GPs through either pathway, ensuring you’re fully guided from the very beginning. Whether that’s getting your documentation ready, coordinating supervisors, or assisting with visas and Medicare numbers.
