There is a great earning potential for GPs in Australia. This is one of the main benefits of relocating.

You will most likely be self employed as a GP in Australia. Because of this, you will take home a percentage of the income/billings the practice makes. This means that rather than negotiate/agree to a salary you be working on a percentage of billings, which ranges between 60% and 70%. A few things to note...

• Often higher earnings and percentages come in more rural locations.
• A higher percentage does not mean you will make more.
• Working hours and patterns can play a factor by way of evenings or weekends.

What is the healthcare system like?

Australia’s health system is one of the best in the world, providing safe and affordable health care for you and your family.

Did you know that Australians enjoy one of the longest life expectancies in the world?!

Private health insurance with Medicare is used by nearly 80% of Australians. Medicare has been Australia’s universal healthcare scheme since the 1900s. Between Medicare and the public hospital system they provide free or low-cost access for all Australians to most of these health care services. Private health insurance gives you choice outside the public system.

You may be eligible for Medicare whilst you are in Australia, you can find more information on the website here: https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/reciprocal-health-care-agreements-visiting-from-united-kingdom?context=22481
If you’re not eligible for Medicare, you can’t claim a benefit for treatment you have in Australia. If you need to lodge an income tax return in Australia, you may be eligible for a Medicare levy exemption.

Lifestyle as a GP in Australia?

Australia’s laid-back culture, outdoor lifestyle, and sunnier climate make it appealing for many GPs. With access to beaches, nature, and ample recreational activities, GPs can lead a more balanced and active lifestyle.

UK GPs in Australia often work around 38-40 hours per week, compared to the longer hours in the UK, and have administrative burdens. This leaves more time for personal pursuits and family. Additionally, working in a less congested healthcare system reduces stress, leading to a better quality of life overall.

What are Medical Centres in Australia like?

Medical Centres in Australia are very different to a GP practice here in the UK, with an existing client of Thomas’ taken to his local practice described it as ‘going back in time’!
Australia medical centres are modern and well equipped with the latest technology and software, lending a hand to Australia’s ranking as one of the top three healthcare systems in the world.

The Medical Centres work supporting their doctors to offer a wide range of medical land health services allowing them to provide and accommodate every patients need Practices are often multidisciplinary and more like health centres offering an array of services such as Pathology, Radiology, Minor Surgery, X-Ray Imaging, Dental, Allied Health and much more! Some centres even have the ability of getting bloods tested and results within the matter of hours!

Are there opportunities for development & Personal Growth?

Australia offers more opportunities for career progression and flexible working conditions. GPs have access to continuing professional development and opportunities to specialise in areas of interest. Practices often offer modern, well-equipped facilities to support professional development.

In contrast, the UK often presents challenges such as increased workload, higher patient demand, and restricted earning potential within the NHS system. GPs may feel overburdened with paperwork and less able to focus on patient care.
